for-the-forest

“Think globally; act locally” ~Buckminster Fuller

For the Forest is an organization I had the pleasure of getting involved with from its inception in the summer of 2008. We are working on a number of issues that threaten the health of our forests today, specifically the Mountain Pine Beetle. We are an Aspen based organization that is focusing first and foremost on Forest Management plans for the Roaring Fork Valley, and with success will extend our efforts to reach all communities with forest health issues in the United States. We seek to educate, motivate, and inspire individuals to learn about the environments in which they live, and to take action that results in protecting and preserving those environments. Off the Mat, Into the World™ (OTM) is a program that aims to inspire and guide you to find and define your purpose and become active in your local or global community in an effective, sustainable and joyful way.  OTM is an educational, experiential and motivational process for those interested in conscious activism and service.   We combine yoga asanas, meditation in-depth self-exploration which culminates in the formation of a group project that is real and in service to the community. We seek yogis all over the world taking their practice Off the Mat and Into the World!

Off The Mat, Into The World® is offering a leadership challenge, of which I have committed to be a participant. I will journey to Uganda in sub-Saharan Africa, one of the poorest areas of the world, where approximately 42 million children do not have access to education, clean water or healthy food. But there is hope for these children. We will be working with three local organizations; Building Tomorrow, Shanti Uganda, and Youth AIDS, to build schools and sustainable farms in Uganda. A group of yoga leaders from around the United States are traveling there to participate in changing these children’s lives through working with them hands on.  We also will leave a financial legacy, not only for the children in Uganda, but also for at-risk youth in the United States. 80% of the net proceeds will go directly to support the organizations in collaboration with Seva Challenge 2009; 60% of this going to Ugandan organizations and 20% going to initiate OTM Youth Initiatives in America. The goal is to raise $30,000 to go on this trip. Although the required amount is $20,000 per person, I’m committed to doing more. My bringing this money to Africa in February 2010 will literally save lives, and leave a legacy I, along with those who support me, will be proud of. If you wish to donate, please contact me: k8@katekolson.com, or click the donate now button below to donate on my behalf. Through community action and love we can change the world!
